Richard Edwards Releases Video for “Moonwrapped,” Produced by Starburns Industries, the Company behind Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa
New Tour Dates in Los Angeles and Chicago Announced
Debut Solo Album Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset out now via Joyful Noise Recordings
In late March, Richard Edwards (frontman and principal songwriter of Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s) released his debut solo album Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset via Joyful Noise Recordings (Kishi Bashi, Surfer Blood). Today, he shared the video for the album’s closing song “Moonwrapped” that was produced by Starburns Industries, the animation company behind Charlie Kaufman’s Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated animated feature film Anomalisa.
IndieWire premiered the video for “Moonwrapped” and called it both “bold” and “beautiful.” Watch the video via Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/216259285
The video was directed by Sofia Astrom, who said “When I got Richard’s song and the handwritten description of his concept for the video, I instantly felt like I had to do this project. Starburns gave me the keys to the castle (literally, the studio is a castle!) and said go do your thing. It was a filmmaker’s dream.”
“For some reason I had always envisioned an animated video for this song,” explains Edwards. “One of my earliest touring memories was getting home, ordering some stuffed crust, and binge watching Moral Orel before binging was supposed to be good for you. When my friend Ron introduced me to Dino and the gang I almost couldn’t believe how pre-destined it all felt. I wrote a big long page summarizing how it could play with The Night of the Hunter, one of the few perfect movies ever made and certainly one of my favorites. This idea seemed to excite everybody. I have to say, Sofia designed and directed something that looks so much better than what was in my brain, which already looked pretty damn good. It actually inspired me to finish writing something I’d been working on, in the hopes that one day she’d direct it.”
Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset was produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Cass McCombs, Beck) with musicians Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello) on drums and guitar work from Mike Bloom (Jenny Lewis). The album debuted at #83 on the Billboard Current Top 200 chart, #4 on the LP Vinyl Albums Chart, and #2 on the Alternative New Artist Album Chart.
Richard is touring select cities this year, with more tour dates to be announced in the near future.
